Astros slugger George Springer likely headed to DL with wrist injury

Center fielder George Springer exited Wednesday night with a right wrist contusion one inning after he was hit in the right wrist by a pitch.

Royals righthander Edinson Volquez hit Springer with a pitch in the fifth inning at Minute Maid Park. Astros athletic trainer Nate Lucero checked on Springer, who remained in the game after a brief visit by manager A.J. Hinch.

Springer winced after diving into third on Jose Altuve’s game-tying RBI single up the middle in the fifth, but he eventually scored the go-ahead run on Evan Gattis’ two-run single in the fifth.

He played center field in the top of the sixth, but Domingo Santana hit for him in the bottom of the sixth.
