As we run through the diamond, we follow a fairly consistent methodology. The idea is that when we want to compare current candidates with players in the Hall of Fame, we should compare them with the so-called rank and file. Comparing anyone to Mike Schmidt is foolish. They won’t measure up. However, if we compare them with the ten players that exist within the median range then we get a better idea of whether they belong in that group or not.
So, part of this is celebrating greatness. Schmidt is the best third baseman in baseball history and no one disputes that fact.
