Astros catcher Hank Conger hoping extra work results in catching more potential base stealers

Hank Conger has lived up to his reputation as one of the game’s better pitch framers in his first year with the Astros, sitting in the top 15 this year when measured on a per game basis, according to StatCorner.com’s measurements.

Offensively, the backup catcher has exceeded expectations against righthanded pitching, entering Wednesday night’s start with a .323 average, .413 on-base percentage and .677 slugging percentage as a lefthanded batter.

What’s throwing Conger for a loop are throws themselves.

Entering Wednesday, the 27-year-old had thrown out just one of 28 potential base stealers.

“I think I’m probably just rushing,” Conger said.
