Astros call-ups: Why Joe Thatcher can receive a spot and Tyler White likely won’t

Righty reliever Josh Fields and lefty reliever Joe Thatcher are the expected additions for the Astros as rosters league-wide expand to potentially include all 40 players on Tuesday. Outfielder Preston Tucker, who technically can’t re-join the team because of roster rules until a day later, on Wednesday, should be back at that point.

Manager A.J. Hinch said adding a lefty reliever was probable. Kevin Chapman, who is on the 40-man roster, is having a poor August and the other lefty reliever on the 40-man, Luis Cruz, has never been to the big leagues. But bringing Thatcher back is most logical because of his own performance since he joined Class AAA Fresno after he was designated for assignment.
