The Astros have agreed to sign a young Cuban pitcher, Carlos Sierra, a person familiar with the deal confirmed to the Chronicle. The agreement is pending a physical.
Sierra is a 21-year-old strike thrower with a four-pitch arsenal. He doesn’t have tremendous stuff but has a good build and delivery. He is not considered a major or expensive acquisition, but the Astros are high on him. He’ll probably compete for a Class A job.
Earlier this year, Sierra was pitching in the Canary Islands in Spain’s top league, per Jesse Sanchez of MLB.com, who first reported the signing.
