In today's Astros rumors and news update, two Houston Astros relief pitchers are receiving plenty of attention in advance of the July 31st non-waiver trade deadline.
According to Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe, teams are inquiring about Chad Qualls and Tony Sipp as the Astros decided whether or not to sell on the two valuable relievers in the next week or so:
Qualls has resurrected his career and is now someone teams are asking about, according to a major league source. Also drawing interest is Houston lefthander Tony Sipp, whose career has been helter-skelter but his good times have been very good.
The Houston Astros entered play on Tuesday with a 41-58 record, placing them one game of their in-state rival Texas Rangers for the worst record in the American League.
However, the Astros have shown signs of putting it all together throughout the year and will now have to gauge which talent will be pivotal in taking the next step and which qualify as the best trade chips to acquire more young talent to supplement their organizational rebuilding program.
It is likely that Qualls and Sipp lie somewhere in the middle of that scale, making the next nine days very interesting ones for both of the Astros' bullpen stalwarts.
