In a short period of time, the Houston Astros have gone from MLB bottom-feeder to World Series contender. The Astros have a four-game lead in the AL West and are in a great position to make the postseason for the first time since 2005. But the Astros don't just want an appearance, they want to win it all. Here are three reasons why the Astros can win the World Series this year.
1. Dynamic Middle Infield
Jose Altuve and Carlos Correa have paired to form one of the better offensive middle infield duos in the major leagues. Altuve leads the team in batting average. He also has 10 home runs and 32 stolen bases. Correa has shown the potential to be the best shortstop in the majors since he was called up. There aren't many shortstops in the 30 home run and 30 stolen bases club, but Correa might end up joining them one day.
2. Talented Outfield
Carlos Gomez hasn't played great since the Astros acquired him, but he's too talented to not turn it around soon. Colby Rasmus hasn't hit for average, but he has shown power. He and Jake Marisnick form a respectable power/speed duo. But the most exciting part is the eventual return of George Springer. He's been out since July with a broken wrist, but should return in early September. Once Springer is back, the Astros will have one of their most promising players playing again.
3. Strong Rotation
Dallas Keuchel has been incredible all season long and is a Cy Young contender. He's an ace in every season of the word and now has some help from his fellow starters. His win-loss record might not show it, but Scott Kasmir has been solid all season long. He's a good No. 2 for Astros. The Astros' potential No. 3 starter in the postseason is Mike Fiers, who is just coming off a no-hitter. The Astros could also throw out either Collin McHugh or Scott Feldman as the No. 3 and be just fine.
