If the University of Hawai’i basketball team is considered a long shot this season, then Brian Garrett is a fitting long shot of a player so far this preseason.
Garrett, a 6-foot-4 junior guard from San Carlos, Calif., is one of 10 newcomers to the roster this season. Despite his non-scholarship status, he is being given an equal opportunity to earn playing time on a team that will not have any returning starters.

“Honestly, that makes it even more fun, just the fact that everyone is competing for spots,” he said. “The atmosphere in practice has been really good … everybody just getting after it.
