Will Soares scored 15 points, Noah Tominaga added 10 and Waiakea survived a late scare to hold on and beat Honokaa 49-48 on Thursday night in a matchup of reigning BIIF boys basketball champions at the Warriors’ gym.
Kamuela Spencer-Herring and Kolten Carvalho led the Dragons (0-1) with 13 points apiece. Trailing by three points, Honokaa inbounded the ball with five seconds remaining and presumably wanted a 3-pointer, but its shooter stepped inside the arc and made a two-pointer.
The Dragons’ Gene Ansagay had 12. Waiakea evened its record at 1-1
Kamehameha 53, Mid-Pacific 48: Nalu Kahapea scored 19 points, and Isaiah Nakoa-Oness added 13 as the Warriors used a big third quarter to win at Punahou’s tournament on Oahu.
