The Minnesota Vikings have brought back cornerback Terence Newman, who turns 39 in September, on a one-year deal. The significance of this should not be overlooked.
It’s not often you see a 39-year-old defensive back in the NFL. In fact, only two that age or older have intercepted a pass in the league — Charles Woodson and Darrell Green — since 1978, per Pro Football Reference.
That’s a phenomenal statistic, and it perhaps says as much about the value of Newman — who has 41 picks in 205 career games over 14 seasons — in Mike Zimmer’s defense as it does to the team’s situation at corner.
