The weather was glorious, the stadium was around two-thirds full, and sportscaster Jack Whitaker was apprehensive as he settled into the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum to do play-by-play for the first Super Bowl.
The game didn't just match the National Football League's Green Bay Packers against the upstart American Football League's Kansas City Chiefs. It also set up a ratings race between two networks simultaneously televising the game for the first and only time, Whitaker's CBS, which held the rights to NFL games, against NBC, the AFL broadcaster.
Whitaker watched the first half, as Ray Scott handled the play-by-play for CBS.
