The record of a football team can vary wildly from year to year even if nothing about the team really changes, which makes prognosticating hard. The first step for me in determining a baseline for a team's true talent is to look at points scored and points against (its Pythagorean record) but even that isn't perfect as a team can undergo profound changes over the course of a season.
