Green Bay — Mike Pennel will remain a backup defensive lineman for the Green Bay Packers even though his production through the first eight games has been outstanding.
Pennel was No. 1 at left end (5-technique) in the base defense during Letroy Guion's three-game suspension to open the season. Guion regained his job in Game 4 and Pennel was relegated to backup duty.
A second-year free agent from Colorado State-Pueblo, Pennel has accepted his status but eyes a larger role in the not too distant future.
"I know they want to go in a different direction," Pennel said Friday.
