The Green Bay Packers want their entire defensive line, including their defensive tackles, to penetrate into the backfield this year. This is a pretty stark difference from former defensive coordinator Joe Barry’s scheme, where interior linemen were asked to slow play the run game — holding their point on the line — so that deep safeties were able to fit the run at the same time as the team’s off-ball linebackers.
Under new defensive coordinator Jeff Hafley, the 4-3 scheme is built around creating chaos up front and spilling everything to the edges, which should lead to more chase-and-tackle attempts for the second-level players on the defense.
