NFL draft created for parity, now it's the big event in the league after the Super Bowl

When Curly Lambeau built the Green Bay Packers rosters in the team's early years, he just went out and got the players he wanted. Fortunately for the Packers, Lambeau was charming and persuasive and he attracted a load of future hall of fame players to isolated Green Bay, Wisconsin.

The Packers were never well-heeled financially, which did not make them unusual in the nine-team NFL, or make it easy to attract players. The draft was suggested by Philadelphia Eagles owner and future NFL commissioner Bert Bell, who felt his team did not have the financial resources to compete with others in attracting players.
