Mike McCarthy wants fans to be confident in new unit

Green Bay— Mike McCarthy, the coach of the Green Bay Packers, basically is asking fans to trust him when it comes to special teams.

After firing his longtime friend, Shawn Slocum, as coordinator in January, McCarthy promoted another longtime friend, Ron Zook, to succeed him.

In short order, McCarthy elevated Jason Simmons from No. 3 to No. 2 assistant for special teams, appointed himself as the new No. 3 and purged his special-teams meeting room of seven of the 10 players that logged the most snaps in the kicking game last season.

"That culture's going to change in there," McCarthy said in February.
