Like the Jordan Love pick, selecting AJ Dillon was a move for the future. With both Aaron Jones and Jamaal Williams in the final years of their rookie deals, GM Brian Gutekunst was planning for the eventual departure of at least one of his running backs, and possibly both.
However, this move still came under heavy scrutiny as many hoped that the Green Bay Packers would bolster their roster with some immediate help after falling in the NFC Championship Game to San Francisco. Not to mention that with the replaceability of the running back position, spending a second-round pick a year in advance was deemed by many in the draft community a wasted resource.
