GREEN BAY, Wis. -- When Green Bay Packers coach Mike McCarthy promoted Edgar Bennett to offensive coordinator in February 2015, it was merely the next, logical step in the coaching career of an assistant McCarthy had long respected. It wasn’t intended to be a statement on the importance of staff diversity.
Nevertheless, when McCarthy, who had repeatedly looked for ways to broaden Bennett’s experience and expand his duties, made Bennett his offensive coordinator -- albeit as part of an offensive flowchart that didn’t last the season -- he did something that hasn’t happened very often in the NFL in recent years.
