Indianapolis — During the final buildup to the NFL scouting combine, which began Wednesday at Lucas Oil Stadium, quarterback Joel Stave received a phone call asking if he'd like to be a designated thrower for the week.
Stave, the former Wisconsin standout, quickly made a phone call of his own to another ex-Badger, Scott Tolzien, for advice. Five years ago, Tolzien, now with the Green Bay Packers, accepted an opportunity to be a thrower — a player who hurls passes for all the receivers, running backs, tight ends and even defenders — and Stave was curious about the process.
