Imagine back to August 1919 when legendary Packers and Green Bay native Earl (Curly) Lambeau mentioned in a casual conversation with Green Bay Press-Gazette editor, George Whitney Calhoun, that he still wanted to play football.
Lambeau was an outstanding high school player who made Knute Rockne’s Notre Dame varsity team as a freshman but had to resign after coming down with a severe case of tonsillitis.
This fateful event led to Calhoun suggesting that Lambeau start his own team. Curly had been working as a shipping clerk for the Indian Packing Company and went to his boss asking him to sponsor the team.
