GREEN BAY, Wis. -- Ron Zook didn’t even need to hear the question. The Green Bay Packers' special-teams coach knew what was coming when the questioner began: “Ron, there’s not a delicate way to ...”
Zook interrupted: “Just say it. I’ve been down this road a bunch of times.”
It’s the question NFL coaches get at this time of year, especially when they’re on a team that has nothing left to do but play out the string in what remains a lost season. It’s the one about change, about getting fired.
And the question wasn’t even necessarily aimed at Zook, whose special teams have been solid, but the 63-year-old coach, who’s been fired from the two head-coaching jobs he’s had (at the University of Florida and the University of Illinois), has been around long enough to know nothing is off the table when you’re with a team that underachieved.
