Cheese Curds, 8/8: Evan Williams is among standout rookies early in training camp

The Green Bay Packers doubling down on a position of need in the NFL Draft this April was no surprise; it’s a strategy general manager Brian Gutekunst has used frequently in recent years. But Evan Williams, the safety out of Oregon, was a bit of a surprise pick in the fourth round of the draft.

Williams was projected by many draft analysists to be drafted later on day three, if at all. In fact, several analysts had his ceiling rated as a backup and special teams contributor. But to this point in his first NFL training camp, he has made some very impressive plays on defense, capping off Wednesday’s practice with another interception off Jordan Love while matched up with Christian Watson in coverage.
