A thin crop at tight end in the NFL draft

Green Bay — As free agency began in early March, there was something of a consensus that tight end was among the positions of need for the Green Bay Packers, a team with a solid core whose periphery could use some fine-tuning.

The stagnant offensive performance of 2015 — disappointing numbers for quarterback Aaron Rodgers, weight issues for tailback Eddie Lacy, regression by slot receiver Randall Cobb, limited deep threats without Jordy Nelson — highlighted a need for playmakers who could tax an opposing defense down the field. And immediately, it seemed, tight end became a focal point of conversation.
