The NFL offseason is already in full swing for the Green Bay Packers. The team has turned its attention away from a 10-6 season in which they came up short in the playoffs several weeks ago. With the offseason here, it's time to highlight the Packers' team needs.
The Packers have several needs to address in free agency and the draft, although the Packers are likely done with free agency for the most part. Although fans might want a new coach, general manager, owner or whatever, only positional needs are detailed here. Needs already addressed via free agency (like re-signing James Starks) are not included. With all that in mind, here are the Packers 2016 Team Needs:
1. Inside Linebacker
The Packers will likely start Jake Ryan at one inside linebacker spot next season, although he has plenty of room to develop. Sam Barrington and Carl Bradford will likely compete for the other starting spot. However, the Packers could use an upgrade at the position. Spending a high draft pick on the spot is an option, although don't be surprised if the Packers elect to look elsewhere early in the draft.
2. Outside Linebacker
Clay Matthews will be moving back outside, which helps fill a big need at this spot. Julius Peppers only has a few years left, while Nick Perry and Datone Jones haven't exactly lived up to expectations. Adding another player, even early in the draft, is a serious option.
3. Defensive Line
The Packers brought back Letroy Guion, which fills a need at either nose tackle or defensive end. But while Mike Daniels is locked in at one DE spot, the Packers need another new starter. Josh Boyd has hardly played, while Mike Pennel is suspended the first four games of the season. The Packers could spend an early pick on the defensive line.
4. Offensive Tackle
The Packers have Bryan Bulaga and David Bakhtiari as the starters, and J.C. Tretter played well when he was on the field. However, Bakhtiari and Tretter will be free agents after the 2016 season and the Packers could try to add another lineman for the future. Don't be shocked if the Packers address the position early.
5. Tight End
Yes, the Packers signed TE Jared Cook. However, he's only a short-term option. The Packers still have Richard Rodgers, but need to find a long-term partner for him. Rodgers has made a few plays, but he's not fast enough to be the Packers' No. 1 TE. He's more of a No. 2. However, it's a poor draft class for the position.
