Anyone who’s even moderately across the NFL news cycle during the offseason will have grown accustomed to seeing report after report about whether or not Aaron Rodgers was set to leave Green Bay, as it turned out, he didn’t.
That in itself should come as a great relief for Packers fans, but it does also create something of a quandary for Matt LeFleur when it comes selecting his starting quarterback.
Retaining Rodgers, for now at least, is a big deal when it comes to just what the Packers are capable of achieving this coming season and will definitely have its effect on the NFL football betting lines. Such is the key nature of the 2020 NFL MVP winner for the Lambeau Field franchise.
Now however LeFleur will have to consider his options in offense. Jordan Love arrived at the 26th overall pick in the 2020 draft and didn’t feature last time around, as Green Bay racked up an impressive 13-3 regular season record before losing to eventual Super Bowl winners Tampa Bay in the NFC Championship game.
During preseason Love has been in fine form, he made his pro debut against the Houston Texans, completing 12 of 17 passes for 122 yards and a touchdown. It did take a while for the 22-year-old to get going but he soon found his feet and may well be a force to be reckoned with when LeFleur considers his starting lineups for the real thing.
Love seemingly felt good out on the field of play and appears ready to make an impact this season, stating;
"Being able to find that rhythm is huge," Love said. "Getting that first completion and being able to move the sticks, that's kind of my takeaway from it. … Just being able to get that rhythm, move the ball, see the field, obviously in this game, it's what wins."
By all accounts, fortunately for the Packers, both Love and Rodgers have a good relationship and that will make it easier for one of them to sit out a game or two, indeed the mentor and student combination could work wonders for Green Bay overall, not least as it’s clear everything it still not cleared up with regards to Aaron Rodgers issues with the team he has represented since 2005.
Love had apparently felt convinced he would be the starting QB, when the Rodgers speculation was at its peak, and now that he may not be, one wonders how things will pan out.
In terms of Green Bay’s chances of going further into the postseason picture this season, things do look good for the Packers. Securing the services of Rodgers was one piece of the jigsaw that was resolved and having tied Aaron Jones and Preston Smith to the organization will also work in LeFleur’s favor.
Green Bay starts their season with a trip to the Superdome to take on the New Orleans Saints in week one.
