Each year, several veterans end up cut or traded by their teams before the start of the regular season. That will likely be the case this year for Green Bay Packers. The Packers are once again a Super Bowl threat, but could pick youth over experience at a few spots on the roster. With that in mind, here are three veterans who are on the bubble to make the Packers' roster.
P Tim Masthay
Yep, we're talking about the punter. The Packers' punter since 2010, Masthay hasn't really had to compete for the job once, which was last year. The Packers added Peter Mortell as a UDFA and the team reportedly wasn't happy with how Masthay hit the ball last year. While Masthay is still the favorite to win the starting job, his spot isn't a secure as its been in years past.
OT Don Barclay
Barclay has served as the team's swing tackle in recent years, but he struggled when pressed into the starting lineup last year. He signed a one-year, $700,000 deal this offseason, and that contract won't prevent the Packers from cutting him. The Packers added Jason Spriggs in the second round, and he's guaranteed a spot on the roster. They also took Kyle Murphy in the sixth round. The Packers might elect to carry only three tackles, which would put Barclay out of a job. If they carry four, he'll need to beat out Murphy. Of all the veterans on the Packers' roster this year, Barclay is the most likely to end up cut.
LB Carl Bradford
Bradford is only a third year pro, so he might be a bit too young to truly qualify as a veteran. But the team's fourth round pick in 2014 is once again in danger of failing to make the 53-ma roster. Originally drafted as an OLB, it was clear early that Bradford wasn't going to make it at that spot. The Packers moved him inside, and despite massive issues at that spot, Bradford never saw the field. Now that the Packers added fourth round pick Blake Martinez this year, Bradford's future with the Packers isn't looking great.
