The Green Bay Packers assigned Jarrett Bush's #24 to rookie cornerback Quinten Rollins on Thursday, prompting rumors that any chances of reunion with the veteran free agent had evaporated.
However, head coach Mike McCarthy sang a different tune entirely when asked about Rollins' new number.
"I don't think [giving out No.] 24 really signifies that," McCarthy said on Friday, via ESPN.com. "Jarrett is a nine-year player here. If he did come back to us and things worked out in the future, he'd be wearing 24. I think it's premature, frankly, that we did that. But Jarrett Bush is still a free agent."
GM Ted Thompson is the one who usually assigns uniform numbers. However, if he was hinting at Bush not re-signing, the message runs counter to the fact that the veteran cornerback's locker and nameplate (with the #24 etched on it) remained intact at the opening of rookie minicamp.
