The Green Bay Packers may be paying reserve safety and special-teams standout Sean Richardson more than they expected to when they offered the restricted free agent around $1.5 million last month, but that's no matter right now.
Per Kevin Patra of NFL.com, "the Packers matched the offer sheet the restricted free agent safety signed with the Oakland Raiders, NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport reported Monday, per a source."
The offer sheet extended by the Raiders was for one year and $2.55 million.
Richardson was only on the field for the Packers for 135 defensive snaps as a safety, but his value as a stabilizing force and tackler on special teams can't be ignored. After new special-teams coordinator Ron Zook used last year to correct some of the special-teams mistakes that had plagued the team in recent years, Green Bay decided that maintaining continuity with Richardson was worth the extra $1 million or so.
