The Green Bay Packers went on a miraculous run and made the NFC Championship Game last season, but are expecting to take the next step forward in 2017. This year, this group has major Super Bowl aspirations - and they added some major impact players in the draft that could help them make a long playoff run this year. Here are three reasons why this draft could serve as the starting point for a Super Bowl run:
1) Secondary help!
This was clearly the biggest need for the Packers going back to last season, and they made sure to address that need early in the draft with cornerback Kevin King and versatile defensive back Josh Jones in the second round. King is going to step in and start right away, allowing Green Bay's other corners to go back to taking lesser roles more fitting to their skillset.
Jones probably won't get a starting role, but his wide range of skills virtually ensures that he'll be on the field a lot. He's a hybrid safety/linebacker who could replace Micah Hyde, but he also has the coverage skills to play cornerback. As long as those two stay healthy, secondary shouldn't be the major problem it was in 2016.
2) Running back help
Whenever a converted wide receiver is set to be your starting running back, you need help at the position. Now, Ty Montgomery will still be the team's starter, but they drafted three running backs (Jamaal Williams, Aaron Jones, Devante Mays) to round out the backfield. Williams appears set to get the most playing time of the bunch, as he is a great between-the-tackles runner who can perfectly complement Montgomery. The Packers needed depth, and they got it.
3) Diamonds in the rough
Secondary and running back were Green Bay's two major needs, but they also helped themselves with several other late-round selections. With Julius Peppers and Datone Jones gone, Vince Biegel - who was very effective at Wisconsin - should receive a lot of snaps at outside linebacker. They also found a good, raw players in defensive lineman Montravius Adams and wide receiver Malachi Dupre, who have the physical tools of a pair of first round picks. If both get the coaching the Packers are known for, they can be stars.
