The reality of the NFL is that each year several veterans end up cut by their teams before the start of the regular season. That will likely be the case this year for the Green Bay Packers. The Packers are trying to win now, but they'll cut veterans if it's in the best interest of the team. That was the case with recently cut punter Jacob Schum.
The Packers would likely try to trade most of these players before cutting them, but more often than not, the players are simply cut. This list only focuses on some of the more notable players, which means we're ignoring the undrafted free agents or other players who don't quite move the needle enough. With that in mind, here are four players the Packers could cut before the season.
WR Jeff Janis
Janis is caught up in a numbers game at WR for the Packers. Randall Cobb, Jordy Nelson and Davante Adams aren't going anywhere. Then there's second-year players in Geronimo Allison and Trevor Davis who have promise (especially Allison). And the Packers drafted DeAngelo Yancy in round five and Malachi Dupree in round seven this year. A few players are getting cut and Janis could be one of them. The Packers can save nearly all of his $700K salary by cutting him. With all the bodies at position, they very well could.
DL Letroy Guion
After a solid first year with the Packers, Guion has struggled. His four-game suspension to start the year for using PEDs doesn't help his chances of making the roster. With players like 2016 first rounder Kenny Clark, 2016 fourth rounder Dean Lowry, rookie Montravius Adams, Mike Daniels and free agent pickup Ricky Jean-Francois and even Christian Ringo, the Packers might not need Guion. He has a $1.35 million roster bonus and the Pack can save $3.25 million in total by dumping him.
CB Demetri Goodson
Goodson played in quite a few games last year before a knee injury ended his season. He tore his ACL and MCL in November, which means there's a good chance he's not ready to start the season. The Packers could try to keep him on the injured reserve list all year, but they really don't need Goodson anymore. Quinten Rollins, Damarious Randall and LaDarius Gunter are all back and the Packers signed Davon House and drafted Kevin King in the second round. That doesn't leave an obvious spot for another corner, especially an injured one. The Packers can save just under $700K in cap space by cutting him.
