Toughness and ability to battle though adversity are two traits that pay off in football and wrestling.
Scottsbluff’s Garrett Nelson has both.
Nelson, a 6-foot-3, 235-pound Nebraska football linebacker commit, is one of the favorites to take home the Class B heavyweight crown this weekend after defeating the No. 2-ranked wrestler, Jade Wurth of Lexington, in last weekend’s district finals.
Prior to committing to Nebraska, Nelson thought his ticket to being a Division I athlete would be on the mat rather than the football field.
He prepared himself by wrestling in 60 to 100 matches the summers of his freshman and sophomore years.
