Tight ends emerging as key pass catchers for Virginia Tech this spring

BLACKSBURG – Drake DeIuliis had the most basic of reasons for leaving the quarterback position behind him when he got to college.

“I could not throw the ball,” DeIuliis said Tuesday before football practice at Virginia Tech, where he is now a redshirt freshman tight end. “I could throw the deep ball, loved throwing the money ball, but then everything short, I would overthrow it or under throw it.”

DeIuliis, who nearly played last season as a true freshman before a hamstring injury derailed him, thought he had left the need to understand the ins, outs and intricacies of offenses in his quarterbacking past when he moved to tight end for the Hokies.
