Saints' decision to place Coby Fleener on injured reserve with concussion was dependent on symptoms

A player rarely goes on injured reserve with a concussion.

The steps of the NFL's concussion protocol and the typical recovery time from the injury do not often require a player to spend eight weeks, or the rest of the season, on injured reserve.

New Orleans placed tight end Coby Fleener on injured reserve in the week after he suffered his second concussion of the season against the Los Angeles Rams.

"He had that one other episode in training camp," Saints coach Sean Payton said. "This one seemed to linger a little bit longer, and so a lot of it was just where we were, our evaluation, the outside experts.
