Steve Gleason’s most significant football moment — blocking an Atlanta Falcons punt in the Saints’ 2006 return to the Superdome following Hurricane Katrina — is commemorated with a statue on the Dome plaza.
But it’s what Gleason has done since being diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, or ALS, three years later that’s meant just as much, if not more — raising millions of dollars along with awareness and impacting the lives of many people with the disease and their families.
It’s that work that has earned Gleason the 2018 Dave Dixon Sports Leadership Award from the Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame.
