OU Football: Sooners gain DL commitment from Notre Dame graduate transfer, will be immediately eligible

Oklahoma added much-needed defensive line depth to its 2018 roster with Sunday’s announcement that Notre Dame’s Jay Hayes will play for the Sooners next season.

Hayes was granted a graduate transfer release from the Fighting Irish and will be immediately eligible following his graduation in May.

The 6-4, 289-pounder from Brooklyn, New York, played 26 games at Notre Dame, registering 39 tackles including four for loss and a sack. He started every game at defensive end last season.

Hayes attended OU’s spring game on Saturday and is the program’s sixth commitment in three days.
