McKewon: Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz's formula is familiar, but it's also a broken record

In the moments after his school-record 144th win on Saturday, Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz joked that he might enjoy an extra scoop of ice cream to celebrate.

He never got around to it. He had salad and pasta, plus some sausage from Graziano Brothers out of Des Moines.

“It is the best,” Ferentz said Tuesday on the Big Ten teleconference. Outside of that, he didn’t get too crazy. Wouldn’t be like Ferentz anyway. He’s lasted 20 years in Iowa City — passing his mentor and predecessor, Hayden Fry, in total wins on Saturday with a 33-7 blowout of Northern Illinois — in part because he sticks to a vision and doesn’t deviate.
