LaPlante stars as Missouri beats Wichita State for ninth straight win

After the Missouri baseball team's doubleheader sweep of La Salle on Saturday, coach Steve Bieser couldn't commit to a starting pitcher for the Tigers' Tuesday game against Wichita State.

Bieser first mentioned a trio of candidates: junior right-hander Brian Sharp (the Tigers' regular third baseman), sophomore left-hander T.J. Sikkema and freshman righty Ian Bedell. He also tossed in another name: junior left-hander Tyler LaPlante.

LaPlante was tabbed as the starter at 5 p.m. Tuesday — 90 minutes before first pitch. By 9:30 p.m., and after the Johnson County Community College transfer pitched into the ninth inning, allowed just two runs and beat No.
