Gonzaga takes care of business, routs Utah Valley in season opener

Nigel Williams-Goss dribbles down the court in the second half of the game against Utah Valley. Gonzaga won 92-69.

Gonzaga in many ways just needed to take care of business and stay healthy before its first big test on Monday against San Diego State.

In No. 14 GU’s debut, which featured veteran standouts, muffling team defense and lineup clues going forward, the team did just that — take care of business.

Veterans Silas Melson and Jordan Mathews led the team with 17 and 16 points, respectively, as the Zags hopped up early, and went on to defeat Utah Valley 92-69 in the McCarthey Athletic Center on Friday.
