BLACKSBURG – Ricky Walker didn’t know that fellow Virginia Tech defensive tackle Jarrod Hewitt had been a competitive power lifter back in high school in Florida.
But he wasn’t surprised.
“I didn’t know that, but I could tell,” Walker said this week as the Hokies prepared for Saturday’s annual spring game. “When he came in, he was power cleaning way more than I could. He’s probably our best squatter now.”
Hewitt, a 6-foot-1, 285-pound sophomore, started competing as a weight lifter as a freshman at Venice (Fla.) High School, reaching the state championships as a junior and senior.
