Woodland battles at U.S. Open with dehydration, virus issues

UNIVERSITY PLACE, Wash. — Gary Woodland spent his post-round on Thursday up the road in the Tacoma General Hospital, needing medical attention for dehydration after his opening-round 76.

He received intravenous fluids until he felt steady enough to return to his residence shortly after 6 p.m. Thursday evening. Woodland said he’s been sick with a virus since Sunday, and has been able to eat very little in the past five days.

By mid-day Friday, feeling less than 100 percent, he was back at Chambers Bay to tackle his second round.

“I had two IVs before I went out yesterday, but I started cramping up out there pretty bad,” he said shortly before teeing off on Friday.
