SAN FRANCISCO — At some point Lee Westwood was going to run out of gas, and it happened during the fourth round of the WGC-Cadillac Match Play in a 3-and-2 loss to fellow Englishman Danny Willett.
Westwood, 42, flew halfway around the world after a playoff win at the CIMB Niaga Indonesian Masters Sunday to get to San Francisco on Monday.
The jet lag showed in his first-round match, a 1-up victory over Matt Every that included a double bogey, five bogeys and six birdies.
Westwood would eventually find his sea legs and dispatch Mikko Ilonen on Thursday, 1 up, and then take down Masters champion Jordan Spieth in an 18-hole thriller on Friday, 2 up, to get a spot in Saturday’s Round of 16, which is where the success would end.
