George Dexter remembers a time when those of his kind, Vietnam veterans, were welcomed back to the United States with all the warmth of an Alaska winter.
"I got spit on when I came home," said Dexter, who served in the Army in the Vietnam War from 1968 to 1971 and left as a sergeant. "When veterans would get to the airport, they would shed their military uniforms in the trash because they didn't want to be recognized as a veteran."
Four decades later, Dexter is competing for a national championship at Pinehurst No. 2 ... precisely because he's a military veteran.
