U.S. Open Columbus qualifier becomes unpopular destination

DUBLIN, Ohio — For a variety of reasons, the U.S. Open sectional qualifier scheduled for Monday in nearby Columbus is quickly becoming an unpopular attraction. USGA officials in the last day have noted at least 13 withdrawals — and there’s likely going to be quite a few more.

Most prominent of the pressing issues is a weather forecast that is dismal, at best. Just yesterday, the Monday forecast called for 100 percent chance of rain, and while it’s been reduced to anywhere form 60-70 percent, the prediction is for heavy stuff in the morning, perhaps with lightning.

Knowing that the USGA would push the qualifying into Tuesday, several players conceded that that was enough to persuade them to pull the plug.
