BRYAN, Texas — Philip Barbaree still is sailing along on Cloud 9.
The winner of the U.S. Junior Amateur rebounded from consecutive bogeys midway through his round and shot a 5-under-par 66 to take the first-round lead Monday at the 40th Junior PGA Championship at Miramont Country Club. He’s one stroke ahead of Austin Eckroat of Edmond, Okla., and Jack Snyder of Phoenix, Ariz.
“It was a good round,” said Barbaree, the highest-ranked player in field (No. 4) from the Golfweek Boys Junior Rankings. “I felt like I could get a couple more (birdies) out there, but it’s a good start.
