MOBILE, Ala. — “Mobile is the smallest big town I’ve ever been in.”

Paul Martino, the director of golf at Magnolia Grove, said that to me when we met before my morning round on The Crossings, an LPGA tour stop along the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail. I’d been in Mobile approximately 14 hours, and already I knew what he meant.

It’s not just the sense that everyone in this city of nearly 200,000 seems to know one another.
