Tom Watson announces 2016 Masters will be his last

ST. ANDREWS, Scotland — On the eve of what will be his final British Open, Tom Watson took the occasion to announce that next spring will be his Masters farewell.

“The tool box is half empty with the tools needed to play,” Watson said with a smile at the Old Course, “and that course (Augusta National) is too big for me.”

This year’s British Open will be Watson’s 38th, having played in every once since 1975, which he won, save for 1996, 2004, and 2007. When he bids farewell at Augusta National next April, it will be his 42nd Masters; he hasn’t missed the pilgrimage since 1975.
