DUBLIN, Ohio — Tiger Woods delivered a day of golf that would have thrilled Forrest Gump – were Gump a golf fan, that is. You know, the proverbial box of chocolates.
“You never know what you’re gonna get.”
Gump famously said it in that iconic movie, and Woods personified it in Friday’s second round of the Memorial Tournament.
The man . . . the legend . . . the work-in-progress . . . he was a veritable mystery from start to finish – utterly brilliant at times, shockingly ragged in spots, thoroughly entertaining throughout. That his more than four-and-a-half-hours of work produced a result (2-under 70 for 1-under 143) that surely pleased tournament officials CBS, and massive galleries that attend this affair – Woods made the cut – speaks to a truism that rankles some, but is accurate nonetheless: Woods remains the most riveting storyline in the sport.
