Thorbjorn Olesen made eight birdies in his last 16 holes Saturday at St. Andrews, and it was enough to push him three ahead going into the final round at the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship.
On a benign scoring day in Scotland, the 25-year-old took advantage. Olesen got off to an inauspicious start with a bogey at the first, but quickly rebounded with birdies at Nos. 3, 4, 7 and 8. Three consecutive birdies from Nos. 14-16 pushed him to 6 under for the day and into the lead.
But the Dane saved his best for last. Facing a 30-foot sharp-breaking left-to-right putt at the last for birdie, a 65 and to reach 17 under, Olesen hit his truest stroke of the day.
