OLYMPIA FIELDS, Ill. – Thomas Detry of Belgium has faced pressure-packed match-play situations during his three years at Illinois, so when he went down three holes to Matt Oshrine through six holes in the U.S. Amateur, he didn’t panic.
A birdie on the par-3 seventh hole at Olympia Fields’ North Course proved to be a turning point and set up a birdie at the par-4 eighth, which quickly changed the complexion of the match. Detry closed the gap against Oshrine, a Loyola (Md.) junior from Baltimore, to 1 down at the turn before pulling even with a par at the 10th.
