Thanks to tips from dad, Bill Haas holds 54-hole Valspar lead

PALM HARBOR, Fla. – Bill Haas remembers the first trophy he ever won. His father, Jay, a nine-time PGA Tour winner, had an artificial putting green in the backyard at the family home in South Carolina. Jay told Bill that if he beat him in a putting contest, Bill could have the pick of the litter of any of dad’s trophies. Imagine Bill’s eyes brightening at the prospect. He was all of 7 years old at the time, but on the final hole of the contest, Bill canned a putt of some 30 feet, and Jay says he lifted the putter “like Jack Nicklaus” as it dropped.
